How to check septic contractor qualifications

A county roster shows a starting point for verifying credentials. It does not prove a company is available, insured for your project, qualified for every task, or willing to accept third-party referrals.

Check role against job

Installer, installer-and-pumper and pumper classifications are not interchangeable. Describe the actual need—pump-out, repair, field work or replacement—and verify applicable permissions with the county.

Ask for current documents

Request certification details, relevant permits, insurance information, written project scope, disposal approach where appropriate and references you can evaluate independently.

Watch for red flags

A company should not promise to skip required permits, guarantee a diagnosis from photos alone or pressure you into an undocumented full-system replacement. Seek a clear written explanation and compare qualified options.

Important: This guide is educational, not technical, health, legal or licensed contracting advice. If you suspect exposure to sewage, avoid the affected area and contact appropriately qualified local help. Check current permit requirements with the county.
