Preparation guide

Prepare for a septic inspection or evaluation

A little preparation saves guesswork. Gather existing permit/as-built records where available and write down what has changed.

Records worth gathering

Include original installation or replacement dates if known, previous pumping/repair receipts, site plans, recent household changes and a timeline of symptoms. If no records exist, say so.

Questions about scope

Does the evaluation include the tank, inlet/outlet, baffles, distribution system and absorption area? Will the inspector provide photos or written findings and make clear what was not accessible?

After the evaluation

Ask for a prioritized written next-step list and the evidence behind any expensive recommendation. Confirm whether proposed next work requires a permit and which professional must obtain it.

Important: This guide is educational, not technical, health, legal or licensed contracting advice. If you suspect exposure to sewage, avoid the affected area and contact appropriately qualified local help. Check current permit requirements with the county.
